What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (72 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“The camp hosts were informative, helpful, friendly, and went above and beyond their duties.”

Gene L 5 · Aug 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Campground VERY well maintained. Pit toilets were spotless, grass mowed and things picked up. Until the bear got into the dumpster, BUT Dave and Deb had everything cleaned up the very next morning. They were very good camp hosts. ”

About

Loleta Recreation Campground sits along the east branch of Millstone Creek in the southwestern corner of the Allegheny National Forest, about six miles south of Marienville and reached by local forest roads from State Route 66 or the Clarion area. The site has 40 campsites in total: 29 sites are equipped for both RVs and tents while 11 are tent-only. The campground is split into a more developed lower loop with larger, tree-surrounded spurs and an upper, primitive loop with smaller, more secluded sites; every site includes a parking spur, picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water are available in the camping loops; the day-use area, centered on a Civilian Conservation Corps dam that forms a small swimming/wading pool, includes a bathhouse with flush toilets, hot showers and changing rooms. Seasonal utilities are provided water is typically turned on around May 1 and electric service for the lower loop is generally switched on in early April (policies and dates can vary), and all reservations, changes and cancellations are processed through Recreation.gov; for facility-specific questions call (814) 363-9090. Outdoors options at Loleta emphasize streamside and forest activities: Millstone Creek is a cold-water fishery with native brook trout and periodic stocking, and fishing is allowed with a valid Pennsylvania license; note that the created swimming/wading area is closed between Memorial Day and Labor Day. A three-mile loop trail begins and ends at the campground and climbs to a rock outcrop on the Millstone Valley edge, while nearby trail networks like the Buzzard Swamp system (about 9.6 miles through a series of ponds) offer longer day hikes. A dirt road southward leads toward the Clarion National Wild and Scenic River where a paved river road is popular with bicyclists and provides access for canoes, kayaks, tubing and riverside picnics. The forest around Loleta is a mix of red oak, white pine, black cherry and maples, and wildlife you're likely to encounter includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear and smaller mammals and birds good reminders to store food securely and follow Leave No Trace practices.
