“Hawthorne Bluff is a great place to camp. It’s close to home, relaxing, and good lake for fishing. The only thing I feel could improve the campground is to have more water hookups.”
“Beautiful park and lake. Went during the week so it wasn’t busy. Super dark at night (no lights) so be prepared. ”

Hawthorn Bluff sits on the northern shore of Oologah Lake less than 30 miles from Tulsa, a wooded campground that opens onto wide stretches of water favored by sailors and powerboaters alike. The site count is generous 90 campsites in all, with 85 configured for both RVs and tents and five reserved for tent camping only and the campground's largest loop, A-LO, contains 64 sites while a small BEAC loop contains a single site. Many of the sites offer 30-amp electric hookups, and practical conveniences are on hand: flush and pit toilets, showers, and a dump station serve visitors, while a playground and an interpretive nature trail provide easy daytime diversions inside the campground. Two group day-use picnic shelters and an amphitheater with a gazebo (each accessible and able to accommodate up to 100 guests) give larger gatherings a place for reunions, ceremonies, or rehearsal dinners right on the lakefront. Oologah Lake itself covers nearly 30,000 acres on the Verdigris River and offers a broad menu of waterside recreation boat ramps and docks are scattered around the shoreline, including at Hawthorn Bluff, and the prevailing winds make the lake a regional destination for sailing as well as water skiing and swimming. Anglers can expect black bass, crappie, paddlefish, channel and blue catfish, walleye and hybrid striped bass, and the park hosts a Kid's Sun, Fun and Fishing Derby Day each June that's popular with families. The forested hills and more than 200 miles of shoreline dominated by post oak and blackjack oak support deer, turkey, ducks and other wildlife, and nearly 13,000 acres of Oologah Wildlife Management Area nearby provide public hunting opportunities. If you want to step off the water, the Will Rogers Dog Iron Ranch living-history museum is close by on the lake, and privately owned lodging and other concession services are available around Oologah. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages Hawthorn Bluff; check with Corps staff for current information on fees, reservations and seasonal schedules before you go.
