WHITE MOUNTAIN
Open in Google Maps ↗
Dolly Copp Campground sits about 6 miles south of Gorham, New Hampshire at the foot of Mount Washington (6,288 feet), set in a mixed hardwood, spruce and pine forest where the Peabody River and Culhane Brook run through the property. As the largest campground in White Mountain National Forest, it contains 168 total campsites: 126 sites are configured for both RVs and tents and 42 are tent-only, with sites laid out in several loops that give each area a distinct feel HAYE contains 12 sites, HOME has 2, and RIVE has 16. Sites tend to be roomy rather than tight; some locations offer 30-amp or 50-amp electrical hookups for RVs. Coin-operated showers, flush toilets, and water spigots are placed throughout the campground to support longer stays. Vehicle access is straightforward from Route 16 (Dolly Copp Road is a short half-mile spur into the campground), and nearby towns such as Gorham, North Conway and Jackson provide groceries, gear and dining within a short drive. Dolly Copp is a practical basecamp for day hikes and longer backcountry trips into the Presidential and Carter-Moriah ranges trailheads like the Daniel Webster Scout Trail lead directly toward the Great Gulf Wilderness on Mount Washington's northeast flank while within the campground anglers can fish for brook trout in the on-site creek and river. The wider White Mountain National Forest supports a wide range of activities including biking, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, winter sports, wildlife viewing (watch for moose, white-tailed deer and black bear), and opportunities to stay in fire lookouts or cabins overnight; birders may encounter nearly 200 species including the rare Bicknell's Thrush. Seasonal programming includes weekend educational talks in July and August, and the end of the camping season often brings strong fall foliage color. Mountain weather can change rapidly summer days may be pleasant but cold, rain or snow remain possible so bring layered clothing and plan accordingly. Fees, reservation policies and exact seasonal opening dates are set by the Forest Service and can change from year to year, so check the White Mountain National Forest recreation page before you go.
