WHITE MOUNTAIN
Open in Google Maps ↗
Basin Campground sits in a quiet, remote pocket of the White Mountain National Forest about 15 miles north of Fryeburg, Maine along Highway 113. The small facility is arranged on a single loop just a short walk from the 23-acre Basin Pond, and the sites sit in a mixed hardwood stand that gives a leafy canopy in summer and crisp colors in fall. There are 13 sites in all: eight sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and five tent-only sites. The campground provides accessible restrooms and drinking water but does not have showers or a dump station, so plan accordingly. Because this is a rustic, lightly developed area, check the White Mountain National Forest website or contact the local ranger district for current information on fees, reservations, seasonal opening dates and any access advisories before you go. Recreation at Basin Campground centers on immediate trail and pond access and the broader opportunities of the White Mountains. A 4.5-mile Basin Trail departs from the campground for hikers, and mountain biking routes and longer backcountry hikes are reachable within a short drive. Basin Pond supports trout fishing and calm-water canoeing, and the surrounding forest offers good wildlife viewing moose, white-tailed deer and black bear are all present and the region hosts nearly 200 bird species including the rare Bicknell's Thrush. Beyond the campground, the national forest supports biking, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming and winter sports; there are four alpine and five nordic ski areas in the region and easy day-trip access to the Presidential Range and Mount Washington for more ambitious climbs. If you visit, bring basic backcountry supplies and follow Forest Service guidance on food storage and wildlife safety.
