WHITE MOUNTAIN
Open in Google Maps ↗
Perched at the base of 6,288-foot Mount Washington and about six miles south of Gorham on Route 16, Barnes Field Campground occupies a single loop in a grassy field that was farmed in the early 1900s, surrounded by mixed hardwoods, spruce and pine. The facility is small 11 sites in all with seven sites set up to accept both RVs and tents and four sites reserved for tents only; the campsites are larger than typical backcountry spots and were designed to accommodate big family outings or organized groups. On-site conveniences are straightforward: potable water and restrooms are provided, and additional services can be found next door at Dolly Copp Campground, which shares trail access and hosts weekend educational programs in July and August. Barnes Field is one of the few campgrounds in the White Mountains that remains open through winter; seasonal policies differ, so winter camping operates on a first-come, first-served basis (individuals may need to share the large sites), and campers should check with the White Mountain National Forest for current fees and reservation rules before arriving. The campground functions as a practical jumping-off point for hiking, fishing and winter sports. Trails into the Presidential and Carter Moriah ranges are nearby, and the Daniel Webster Scout Trail begins at the southern end of Dolly Copp and leads into the Great Gulf Wilderness on Mount Washington's northeast side; many more miles of hiking, mountain biking and climbing are within a short drive. Anglers can try for brook trout in the Peabody River and Culhane Brook that pass the field, while wildlife viewers may spot moose, white-tailed deer, black bear and numerous bird species, including high-elevation specialties. Summer days here are often pleasant but mountain weather can shift quickly even summer trips warrant preparation for cold, rain or snow and winters bring bitter cold and opportunities for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice climbing. For supplies, dining and shuttle or guide services, the towns of Gorham, North Conway and Jackson are the nearest bases; confident drivers can also access the Mount Washington Auto Road in season or the Cog Railway about an hour away for high-elevation perspectives.
