Hastings Campground sits on Route 113 in western Maine, roughly three miles south of Gilead and within easy reach of Gorham, New Hampshire. The site occupies a mixed hardwood stand at the base of Mt. Hastings, a short distance from Evans Brook and the Wild River, giving campers direct access to small-stream fishing and forested walking. The looped campground contains 14 campsites total; each of the 14 sites accommodates both RVs and tents and is shaded and well spaced around a single loop. Facilities are modest and geared to a rustic stay there are accessible vault restrooms and a hand pump for water, plus a large open play area for children and no other amenities are listed, so expect a back-to-basics experience and plan accordingly for water, power and waste needs. The area around Hastings offers a wide range of outdoor activities. On-site and nearby options include fishing in local streams, family-friendly hiking (including a short 2-mile trail) and a more strenuous 9-mile route on Mt. Hastings; mountain biking is also common in the vicinity. The famous Appalachian Trail is about a half-hour drive from the campground, and the broader White Mountain National Forest supports biking, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, wildlife viewing and winter sports the region includes four alpine and five Nordic ski areas that help make recreation a year-round possibility. Wildlife in the forest includes moose, white-tailed deer and black bear, and the area supports almost 200 bird species, among them the rare Bicknell's thrush. Because fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings are set by the Forest Service and can change, check the White Mountain National Forest website before you arrive; also come prepared for primitive facilities and bear-aware food storage.
