West Ashtabula Crossing sits on about 23 developed acres along the shore of Lake Ashtabula in eastern North Dakota, on a wooded hillside that shades most sites and drops down toward the wide, glacially-sculpted prairie pothole landscape. The Baldhill Dam on the Sheyenne River formed the lake in 1944, and the surrounding valley is managed both for flood control and as nearly 3,000 acres of wildlife habitat. Visitors come for the waterfowl large flocks of white pelicans are a seasonal highlight as well as for deer, sharptail grouse, wild turkey and other grassland species. The campground is roughly 15 miles north of Valley City and is most easily reached from I-94 via the Valley City exit; the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway and access points to the North Country National Scenic Trail are nearby, so you can pair a campsite with long river-valley drives or multi-day hikes. The camping area contains 30 sites in total: 29 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, and one site is tent-only. On-site facilities include a boat launch, dump station, a fishing pier, a fish cleaning station and a picnic shelter, while a swimming beach, playground and a restaurant are located less than a mile from the campground. Lake Ashtabula supports a strong fishery walleye, northern pike, white bass, yellow perch and black bullhead and the broader lake complex has seven boat ramps, three accessible fishing piers and four automated fish-cleaning stations for anglers. Summer visitors tend to focus on boating, swimming and picnicking; in winter the lake freezes for ice fishing and cross-country skiing. The campground fills up on most weekends, so check the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or the park's reservation site for current fees, availability and seasonal openings, and contact the North Dakota Game and Fish Department for up-to-date fishing and hunting regulations and licensing.
