Mel Rieman Campground sits along the western shore of Lake Ashtabula, a 70-acre recreation area that looks out over the prairie pothole country created when the Baldhill Dam impounded the Sheyenne River in 1944. The site is especially noted for wide, colorful sunsets over the water and for being within easy walking distance of the Mel Rieman day-use area, where you'll find a visitor center, swim beach, playgrounds, picnic shelters and concessions. The campground itself has 28 sites in all: 20 that accommodate both RVs and tents and eight that are tent-only. Basic campground services include drinking water, showers and flush toilets; some sites provide hookups, so check ahead if you need electrical service. Valley City is the nearest town about 10 miles away, and the usual access is from I-94 via the Valley City exit, with signs directing you the rest of the way contact the Corps of Engineers or the park office for current fees, reservation procedures and seasonal openings. Recreation extends far beyond the campsite: Lake Ashtabula supports boating from multiple ramps, two accessible fishing piers and four automated fish-cleaning stations, and anglers will find walleye, northern pike, white bass, yellow perch and black bullhead among the common catches. Nearly 3,000 acres around the lake are managed for wildlife habitat and open to the public for birding, hiking and hunting (check regulations and licenses with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department). Summer brings large numbers of migratory waterbirds, including white pelicans, while winters convert the area into a place for ice fishing and cross-country skiing. If you want to explore farther afield, the campground is a short drive from the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway and provides access to long stretches of the North Country National Scenic Trail; private lodging and other concessions are available nearby for visitors who want alternatives to camping.
