Fort Hamby Park sits on the north side of the 1,475-acre W. Kerr Scott Reservoir in the Yadkin River Valley, in the foothills of the eastern Blue Ridge Mountains. The campground occupies a narrow strip where a thick hardwood canopy sycamore, poplar, oak and hickory backs up to the lake shoreline, so many sites feel shaded while still being only steps from water. There are 36 campsites in total: 32 sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents (these dual-use sites include electric hookups) and four are tent-only sites; the park also maintains a large group site that can handle up to 100 guests. Modern comfort facilities are on site flush toilets, drinking water and showers and family-friendly extras include a sandy swim beach, a playground, a basketball court and a horseshoe pit, making the campground a practical base for multi-generational visits. The reservoir and surrounding public lands shape most recreational opportunities: boating, canoeing and kayaking are popular on the open water, and swimmers use the beach area; anglers target channel catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, threadfin shad, spotted bass, striped bass and hybrid striped bass. Trails for hiking and mountain biking ring the lake and link to the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, with another roughly 25 miles of routes in the nearby Warrior Creek and Dark Mountain areas so you can combine shoreline paddling with longer backcountry rides or history hikes. The valley supports abundant wildlife (white-tailed deer, black bear, eastern cottontails) and a healthy bird list, including wild turkey, wood ducks and forest songbirds, which makes the park useful for wildlife viewing and environmental-education outings as well as camping. Practical note: the campground is roughly an hour north of Winston-Salem and about 1.5 hours from Charlotte via Highway 421/I-77 toward Wilkesboro; specific fees, reservation policies and seasonal access can change, so check the official W. Kerr Scott/Corps of Engineers site before you go.
