About

Bandits Roost sits on the south shore of the 1,475-acre W. Kerr Scott Reservoir in the Yadkin River Valley just outside Wilkesboro, North Carolina, a roughly one-hour drive from Winston-Salem and about 90 minutes from Charlotte along Highway 421. The setting is gently rolling foothills of the eastern Blue Ridge where mixed hardwoods sycamore, poplar, oak and hickory fringe the water and fields, and common sightings include white-tailed deer, songbirds and the occasional black bear. Water is the draw here: anglers cast for channel catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, threadfin shad and both striped and hybrid striped bass, while paddlers and powerboats use the lake for canoeing, kayaking and boating. Trails radiate away from the campground, including a trailhead for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail directly at the site, and another 25 miles of multi-use routes at Warrior Creek and Dark Mountain for hiking and mountain biking. Beyond active recreation, the area supports environmental education and historic interpretation tied to the reservoir and regional landscape, and quieter pursuits wildlife viewing, picnicking and shoreline walks are all readily available. The campground itself has 103 sites in two loops (Loop A: 72 sites; Loop B: 31 sites) that accommodate different styles of camping: 86 sites are reserved for both RVs and tents, while 17 are tent-only, and the sites with hookups provide water and electric service. Facilities are straightforward and practical: flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station meet basic needs, and the site provides a boat ramp and a swim beach for lake access. Families and groups will find a playground, a basketball court and an amphitheater on site, and a popular group tent area includes a covered shelter with water and electricity, a grill, six picnic tables and seven tent pads for organized gatherings. Policies on fees, reservations and seasonal availability vary, so campers should check current information online or call the managing office before arrival; the campground is vehicle-accessible from Jess Walsh Road on the reservoir's south side and supports a range of activities listed for the park, from auto touring and fishing to water sports, camping, historic-site visits and other concession-based recreation.
