“The tent pad wasn't big enough for even a small tent. The site was really small too. We had to leave, because we couldn't fit our tent. I asked for a refund and they refused. They don't have good customer service.”
“Very friendly campground is GREAT! Rangers and hosts are the best!! One of our favorite campgrounds ”
“Great campground! The music center is a must see. ”

Doughton Park Campground sits on a high ridgetop of the Blue Ridge Parkway at about 3,688 feet in elevation, occupying roughly 7,000 acres of rolling meadows and steep mountainsides where open fields, pioneer cabins and long-range mountain views define the landscape. The campground itself (milepost 239) contains 111 campsites in three loops Loop A (24 sites), Loop B (67 sites) and Loop C (20 sites) and the site mix includes 39 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, 24 RV-only sites and 48 tent-only sites. Campsites are heavily shaded and come with picnic tables, lantern posts, fire rings and grills; the campground also provides flush toilets, comfort stations, drinking water and a dump station. Three group sites can be reserved for larger gatherings. Reservation policy: 24 sites are available for advance reservation; the remaining sites are first-come, first-served and must be claimed in person at the campground kiosk (availability of those sites cannot be tracked through Recreation.gov). The Bluffs picnic area (milepost 241) and the recently reopened Bluffs Restaurant (see www.bluffsrestaurant.org for hours) are nearby conveniences, and the picnic area's open fields make for good night-sky viewing when light pollution is low. Recreation at Doughton Park centers on more than 30 miles of foot and horse trails that range from easy family strolls to strenuous ridge descents. Notable routes include Bluff Mountain Trail (7.5 miles) with many viewpoints, Cedar Ridge Trail (4.4 miles) down to Grassy Gap Fire Road, Grassy Gap Fire Road itself (6.1 miles) wide enough for hikers and horseback riders and accessed from Milepost 243.9 with Longbottom Road as the horse entry/exit and Flat Rock Ridge (5.0 miles) which drops from Basin Cove Overlook to the cool banks of Basin Cove Creek. Basin Cove Creek is reached via Grassy Gap Fire Road plus a 1.7-mile approach (4.9 miles one way; 9.8 miles roundtrip) and includes more than 26 creek crossings and the century-old Caudill Cabin; Bluff Ridge Primitive Trail (2.7 miles) is the steepest route into Basin Cove, while the short, spring-flower friendly Fodder Stack Trail (1.4 miles roundtrip) is a good option for families. The one-room Brinegar Cabin (circa 1885) is open from Memorial Day weekend through October with occasional hand-loom weaving and craft demonstrations, and a historic cemetery sits near milepost 245.5. Anglers will find stocked Rainbow and Brook Trout in the Basin Cove complex (check visitor center for regulations and bring a valid Virginia or North Carolina fishing license), and primitive backcountry camping in Basin Cove is available with a free permit from the campground office (May October) at 336-372-8877 or the Bluffs District Office at 828-348-3487. Note: GPS devices and general mapping programs do not always provide reliable directions to Doughton Park the safest approach is to follow the Blue Ridge Parkway access routes rather than trusting shortcut routing over steep or unpaved local roads. Activities on site and nearby include auto touring, biking, camping, fishing, hiking, historic and cultural sites, picnicking and wildlife viewing (white-tailed deer, foxes, bobcats and spring rhododendron and flame azalea displays are common).
