About

Smokemont Campground sits at about 2,200 feet on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, surrounded by the park's layered ridges and stream-carved valleys. The looped campground contains 138 sites in all: 96 sites configured for both RVs and tents plus 42 RV-only sites, distributed across Loop A (7 sites), Loops B and C together (46 sites), Loop D (43 sites) and Loop F (42 sites). Sites come with tent pads, grills and fire rings, and the campground provides flush toilets, sinks and drinking water; a flat, grassy common area near the loops is large enough for group games or lounging on sunny afternoons. Expect a moderate mountain climate generally mild winters and hot, humid summers and the steady presence of forest and streams that supply trout-fishing opportunities and a green backdrop that changes dramatically from wildflower season to autumn color. Smokemont is a practical base for exploring the park's 800+ miles of trails, nearby Bradley Fork River access for fishing and cooling off, and auto touring along Newfound Gap Road (US 441). Wildlife viewing is a common draw black bears are often seen in the park while cultural sites are close at hand: the park preserves more than 90 historic log structures, and Cherokee's Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Oconaluftee Indian Village and the Qualla Arts and Crafts cooperative are about six miles away, where fuel and other services are available. Reservations are recommended; there is no street address for the campground, but it's reached off Newfound Gap Road about 6 miles north of Cherokee (or 27 miles south of Gatlinburg). Be aware of the campground's cancellation rules: canceling the day before or on arrival incurs a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (not to exceed the total paid), one-night reservations forfeited in full, and refunds for early departure require contacting the campground office the day you leave (requests made after the reservation ends are denied).
