Cataloochee Campground sits in the quieter reaches of the Cataloochee Valley on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, at about 2,600 feet elevation. The site is framed by layered ridges and crossed by Cataloochee Creek, and visitors often see elk moving through the basin in spring and fall. There are 27 campsites in the loop, and all 27 are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents; you'll find flush toilets and drinking water on site, but no electrical or sewer hookups and no showers, so plan accordingly. The campground's moderate mountain climate brings mild winters and hot, humid summers, and the valley changes dramatically with the seasons from spring wildflowers and a strong trout insect hatch to vivid fall color so timing your visit shapes the experience. Access is relatively remote compared with other park areas; the common route from I-40 is Exit 20 onto Cove Creek Road toward the park boundary, with the final miles on a mix of paved and gravel surface roads. Recreation at Cataloochee centers on trails, streams, and the park's preserved mountain culture. A less-used trail network runs through the basin Caldwell Fork and Rough Fork Trail parallel one another alongside creeks and are open to hikers and horseback riders; the Boogerman Trail is a 3.9-mile loop for hikers only and begins less than a mile from the campground. Anglers target Rainbow and Brook trout in Cataloochee's streams, and spring is particularly good for fly fishing during aquatic insect hatches. Several restored 19th-century structures are nearby Palmer House (1869) operates as a self-guided museum, and the Steve Woody House (1880) and Caldwell House are within easy day-hike distance (the Steve Woody House is about a 2-mile roundtrip from the Rough Fork trailhead off Ranger Station Road). For larger groups or riders, the Cataloochee Group Camp and a separate Horse Camp are close by. Typical park activities available here include auto touring, biking, camping, fishing, hiking, visiting historic and cultural sites, horse camping and horseback riding, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. If you make a reservation, note the park's cancellation rules: canceling the day before or on the day of arrival incurs a $10 service fee and forfeits the first night's fee (not to exceed the total paid); canceling a one-night reservation forfeits the entire payment without the additional service fee. To request refunds for early departure or non-use you must contact the campground office on the day you leave or were due to check in refund requests made after the reservation has ended will be denied.
