Cosby Campground sits in the eastern portion of Great Smoky Mountains National Park a few miles south of the small community of Cosby on TN-32, at about 2,460 feet elevation. The looped layout 64 sites in A-Loop and 93 in B-Loop adds up to 157 sites total, the vast majority set up for tent camping (134 tent sites) with 23 RV sites scattered through both loops. Each campsite comes with a 16 x 16 foot tent pad, picnic table, fire ring and grill, and a scattering of trees that keep most sites shaded; flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station are on site. Cosby tends to be quieter than the park's larger front-country campgrounds, so it's a good choice if you want a traditional, low-traffic camping experience. The campground includes a few ADA sites (A57 and A61) and a mix of RV-only and RV sites that also include tent pads examples include RV-only spots in A01 A03 and B48, while sites such as A17 and B93 combine an RV space with a tent pad so check the map and site descriptions to pick the setup that works for your rig and party. Recreation from Cosby ranges from short creekside strolls to long ridge walks: the Appalachian Trail is roughly three miles away via Lower Gap Trail, and the park's 800+ miles of maintained trails start within easy driving distance. Streams through the area offer good trout fishing, and wildlife viewing is reliable the park is home to around 1,500 black bears and a broad diversity of plants and animals, plus more than 90 preserved historic log structures nearby for those interested in Southern Appalachian culture. Practical details to note before you go: all sites are RESERVATION ONLY (same-day reservations can be made), no cash is accepted at the campground office, and reservations and cancellations follow the park's fee rules (cancellations the day before or the day of arrival incur a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee; one-night reservations cancelled forfeit the entire amount). For reservations call 877-444-6777 or reserve online, and if you plan to leave early or not use your reservation, contact the campground office the day you depart to request any eligible refund.
