“This is God's country and if you can't help protect nature then you don't deserve places like this.”
“Very nice quiet campground on the parkway bathrooms were very clean. Will definitely go back. We stayed in an RV site T4. Nice spacious sites not close together.”
“Beautiful fall colors everywhere. Very quiet campground. I wish that loops B, C would have been open.”

Perched along Milepost 167.1 of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Rocky Knob Campground sits in the rolling meadowlands of southwestern Virginia where wide-open pastures and seasonal wildflowers give way to forested ridges. The campground is part of the larger Rocky Knob Recreation Area more than 4,000 acres of Appalachian forest and offers easy access to two hallmark hikes: the Rock Castle Gorge Trail, a 10.8-mile loop that swings between roughly 1,700 and 3,572 feet and crosses the 1,500-foot ravine carved by Rock Castle Creek, and the moderate 3-mile Black Ridge Trail that follows a gravel road and meadow from the visitor center. Rock Castle Gorge is noted for crystalline quartz outcroppings and the ghostly remains of old mountain orchards and stone chimneys; in summer, rangers and volunteers lead tours and interpretive talks that bring that history and the area's plants and wildlife into clearer focus. The Parkway itself provides driving and cycling opportunities, numerous overlooks for long-range views, and convenient access to picnicking, wildlife viewing, fishing, and nearby cultural stops like Mabry Mill and the town of Floyd (about 8 miles away) but be aware that mapping apps and some GPS directions can be unreliable here, so double-check your route before you set out. On the practical side, Rocky Knob blends a traditional camping feel with basic modern conveniences: sites come with picnic tables, lantern poles and fire rings/grills, and the campground offers flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station. There are 106 campsites in total 53 sites configured for both RVs and tents, 27 RV-only sites and 26 tent-only sites spread across four loops (Loop A: 27 sites; Loop B: 26 sites; Loop C: 26 sites; Loop T: 27 sites). Forty-four of the sites can be reserved in advance through Recreation.gov; the remaining 62 are first-come, first-served and must be claimed in person at the campground kiosk (their availability is not visible online). Primitive backcountry camping is available in Rock Castle Gorge with a free permit (obtainable May October at the Rocky Knob campground office or year-round via the Rocky Knob District Office at 540-745-9660). If you need supplies, Floyd and Mount Airy (about 30 miles away) provide groceries, gas and services; otherwise plan on relying on what you bring, and note that interpretive programs are concentrated in the summer months.
