Philpott Lake sits in the rugged foothills within sight of Virginia's Blue Ridge, its clear water and nearly natural shoreline spread across roughly 2,900 acres with about 100 miles of shoreline. The lake and the surrounding 6,000-plus acres are part of the Philpott Project a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers development begun in 1944 for flood control and hydroelectric power so you'll see the mix of engineered infrastructure and large tracts of mixed hardwood and pine forest. Along the steep, rocky banks oak, maple, hickory, pine and cedar give way to open shorelines and shallow coves where wildlife is commonly seen: deer, wild turkey, songbirds, waterfowl and the small mammals of rural south-central Virginia. The campground is in a quiet, sparsely populated part of Franklin County near the community of Henry; it's most easily reached from US-220 via Henry Road (SR-605) and Knob Church Road note that GPS routing via SR-727 (Stoney Brook Lane) or SR-894 (Johnson Hill Road) is not recommended. Salthouse Branch Campground offers a full range of sites and on-site amenities for day users and overnight visitors. There are 110 total campsites: 57 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 32 tent-only sites, and 21 boat-in sites for paddlers and anglers who want water access. Facilities include flush toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station, plus a beach, boat ramp, dock, playground and an amphitheater; the campground also contains a half-mile nature loop and a half-mile interpretive trail, with many more miles of hiking and biking trails throughout the Philpott area. Anglers come for largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, bluegill, crappie and catfish, while boaters and swimmers take advantage of the broad water surface and shore access. For practical matters like fees, reservations and seasonal availability, check the Army Corps or park website before you go; if you're navigating by GPS, follow the posted approach from US-220 and avoid the SR-727/SR-894 routes.
