Lid Creek Campground sits along the western shore of Hungry Horse Reservoir in the Flathead National Forest at about 3,600 feet, shaded by a mixed stand of conifers and threaded with huckleberry bushes. The campground has 23 sites configured for both tents and RVs, each equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill; vault toilets are provided but there is no drinking water on site, so bring your own supply. The narrow West Side Reservoir Road leads across the Hungry Horse Dam to the campground about 15 miles south of Hungry Horse and includes many switchbacks and tight stretches, so drivers should use caution and avoid large RVs where possible. You can stay up to 16 consecutive nights, and sites allow two vehicles (the first vehicle is included in the site fee; a second vehicle is charged $5 on arrival). Recreation centers on the reservoir and the network of trails that begin near camp: boating, swimming and fishing are popular on the 27,750-acre Hungry Horse Reservoir (cutthroat trout are commonly sought by anglers), and a variety of biking and hiking routes loop around the water. The broader Flathead National Forest offers other opportunities wildlife viewing (including species such as lynx and grizzly bear further afield), horseback riding, hunting, winter sports and backcountry access and Lid Creek is about 23 miles southwest of the West Glacier entrance to Glacier National Park for day trips. Reservations can be made by phone at 1-877-444-6777; if a cancellation is needed within the four-day reservation window the concessionaire will consider a refund of camping fees but will automatically forfeit the first night's fee, day-of-arrival cancellations must be reported by calling Cheryl at 406-752-PWAI (7924) or 406-404-4164 to notify the campground host, and no-shows are not eligible for refunds.
