SAWBILL LAKE CAMPGROUND - SUPERIOR NATIONAL FOREST
Open in Google Maps ↗
Sawbill Lake Campground sits on a wooded hill above Sawbill Lake, offering immediate access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness within Superior National Forest. The campground contains 23 campsites, each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs and the presence of a dump station and level parking makes it practical for larger motorhomes. Sites are set among tall pine and mixed forest that delivers good privacy; a few openings give partial views down to the 765-acre lake. Basic campsite amenities include picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, vault toilets, drinking water and trash/recycling everything you need for an uncomplicated stay and the concession operated by Sawbill Canoe Outfitters is within easy walking distance for showers, laundry, fishing licenses, bait and tackle, ice and grocery items. The main reason most people come here is canoeing: Sawbill is a convenient launch point into the Boundary Waters, and day or overnight travel in the wilderness requires a permit (the outfitter handles permits, canoe rentals and guided trips). From the campground you can also fish for northern pike and bass, ride nearby forest roads and trails by bike, hike, picnic and join occasional educational programs; wildlife is abundant look for loons on the water and bald eagles overhead, and be aware moose and bear inhabit the area. Access is straightforward for travelers heading up Minnesota's Arrowhead: drive north from Tofte on Sawbill Trail (off Highway 61) for about 24 miles to reach the campground entrance. If you plan to venture into the Boundary Waters, arrange permits and any canoe rentals in advance with the outfitter and plan to secure food and gear appropriately for a forest where large wildlife are part of the landscape.
