“Great if you’re wanting to be secluded! My site had a little trail down to the lake. Beautiful place to stay for a few nights.”
“Didn’t appreciate the A Class RV across from us in space 12, running their generator for multiple hours in the early evening. In a small campground like this one, generators should not be run during the supper hours.”
“wonderful campground with spectacular views”

GUNFLINT RANGER DISTRICT
Open in Google Maps ↗
Trail's End Campground sits at the end of the Gunflint Trail in the northern reach of Superior National Forest, immediately adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The campground fronts the Seagull River and provides direct water access to Seagull, Gull and Saganaga Lakes, so paddling and fishing are the dominant draws: expect anglers to be after walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass and lake trout, while paddlers can follow routes that begin at any of the four BWCAW entry points (54, 55, J and K). Overnight and day-use permits plus boat motor permits with horsepower limits are required for BWCAW travel; these permits and long- or short-term parking for BWCA put-ins are available at the campground. Wildlife viewing is a regular part of the day here (bald eagles, osprey, loons and moose are commonly seen) and the forest floor is dotted with blueberries in season. The landscape shows signs of a past fire a patchwork of burned and surviving stands of white and red pine, aspen and birch so you'll see a young forest in recovery and should take care on fragile post-fire soils and regrowth areas. Facilities at Trail's End are a mix suited to backcountry access and serviceable comfort. There are 33 total campsites: 18 sites designated for both RVs and tents and 15 tent-only sites; many of the tent sites are walk-to and some offer water views or direct water access while others sit above steep drop-offs. Several drive-in sites will accommodate large rigs (up to 45-foot RVs). The campground is routinely patrolled by the County Sheriff and a campground host. Commercial outfitters and services operate nearby or at the entrance, providing canoe rentals, outfitting, showers, groceries and basic gear, and recreation maps and guides for hiking and canoe routes are available from the Forest Service. If you plan to visit, secure the required BWCA permits and consult the Superior National Forest for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal access, and consider a stop at the nearby Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center for short trails and local history.
