Waitsboro Campground sits on the southern shore of Lake Cumberland about five miles south of Somerset along Highway 27, accessed via Waitsboro Road. The site has 22 total campsites: 17 sites equipped with electric hookups that accommodate both RVs and tents, plus five tent-only sites; eight of the RV/tent sites are located right on the waterfront. Campsite comforts include flush toilets, showers, drinking water and laundry facilities, along with a dump station for RVs. A small day-use area with a group picnic shelter and parking offers an easy place to gather, and the campground is shaded by mature hardwoods that frame broad views over the main body of the lake. Recreation at Waitsboro is dominated by Lake Cumberland's open water: boating and water sports are primary draws, with Burnside Marina about 10 minutes away for boat rentals, a restaurant and a general store. Anglers will find largemouth and smallmouth bass, Kentucky and white bass, bluegill, crappie, rockfish and walleye throughout the lake, while hikers and families can use the nearby Black Walnut Nature Trail a self-guided educational loop by the lake office that's open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST. The broader Lake Cumberland area supports a long list of activities, from camping, picnicking and wildlife viewing to horseback riding, historic and cultural sites and playgrounds; for current fees, reservation procedures, seasonal openings and any access requirements, check with the Lake Cumberland office or the park's reservation system before you go.
