Fishing Creek Campground occupies a wooded bench above the shore of Fishing Creek on Lake Cumberland, a large reservoir on the Cumberland River that stretches roughly 100 miles and delivers more than 1,200 miles of shoreline to explore. The site is forested with mature hardwoods that shade sites and provide habitat for songbirds and deer, and the campground's compact layout contains a total of 46 campsites 26 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 20 tent-only sites. Every campsite comes with water and electric hookups, a picnic table, a combination fire pit/grill and a lantern post, so evenings at camp are straightforward whether you bring a trailer or a sleeping pad. Practical facilities that make extended stays convenient include flush toilets and hot showers, drinking water, a washer/dryer, a dump station and an on-site boat ramp; there's also a day-use picnic area and a playground, which many families use when gathering for reunions or birthday outings. Fishing Creek puts you on the water quickly: anglers find largemouth and smallmouth bass, Kentucky and white bass, bluegill, crappie, rockfish and walleye throughout the lake, and boaters have hundreds of miles of open water for cruising and water sports. If you need services beyond the campground, Lee's Ford Resort Marina is under 10 minutes away for boat rentals, a general store, a restaurant and lodging, and the Mill Springs Battlefield Park a Civil War interpretive site with exhibits, a gift shop and seasonal reenactments is about 15 minutes by car. The larger Lake Cumberland recreation area supports hiking, horseback riding, environmental education, visitor center programming and other outdoor pursuits; because policies, fees and seasonal access can change, it's a good idea to check current reservation rules and any user fees with the Lake Cumberland office before you go. To find the campground from Somerset, head west on Highway 80 a few miles and then follow East Highway 1248 toward the lake the recreation area entrance sits at the bottom of the hill on the left.
