Laurel Branch Campground sits along the shore of Rough River Lake amid the rolling, forested hills of south-central Kentucky, where sandstone, shale and limestone outcrops and an abundance of underground water have carved sinks and caverns that punctuate the landscape. The campground is part of a larger 5,100-acre recreation area managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Commonwealth of Kentucky; the lake draws anglers after bass, crappie and catfish (bass tournaments are held here through the year) and boaters who can rent pontoons, johnboats and jet skis at nearby marinas. Wildlife watchers will find migratory songbirds and waterfowl around the shore, and short nature trails, a public beach and water-sports-friendly coves give plenty of options for days spent on or near the water. Historic Green Farm and its 3,000 acres complete with an ancestral home, a water-powered mill and store, and a golf course lies adjacent to the lake, and Mammoth Cave National Park is roughly an hour's drive away for those who want to pair paddling and fishing with cave exploration. The campground itself offers 62 sites in four loops: Loop A has 19 sites, Loop B 10, Loop C 23 and Loop D 9. Sixty-one sites are configured for both RVs and tents and one is tent-only; several sites have electric hookups, and most sites are waterfront or just a short walk from the water. On-site conveniences include flush toilets and showers, drinking water, a playground, a boat ramp and a fish-cleaning station, plus a nature trail and public beach; wi-fi is available from an outside source for an additional fee. Reservations are handled with a few standard fees and penalties: there is a $10 fee to cancel, change sites, or change dates; cancellations made the day before arrival through the day after arrival are charged the first night's use fee; no-shows incur a $20 fee plus the first night's use fee (if your reservation is only for one night and you're charged the first night's use fee, the $10 or $20 service fee is not also charged).
