Moutardier Campground sits along the shore of Nolin River Lake amid the rolling, forested hills of southern Kentucky, where the lake's distinctive blue-green water draws anglers and boaters through much of the year. Nolin is regularly ranked among the state's best lakes for catfish, bass, crappie and walleye, and the campground's shoreline sites make early-morning casts especially convenient. Canoe and small-boat trips are a particular draw here because much of the river corridor follows Mammoth Cave National Park, so paddlers can work stretches of quiet, tree-lined water that feel more remote than the lake's overall popularity; the project records more than two million visitors annually but also maintains one of the lowest drowning rates in the state. Around the lake you'll find multiple boat ramps, three marinas (Moutardier, Ponderosa and Wax) that rent pontoons and john boats and sell bait, gas and basic groceries, and several trails such as Shady Creek Trail that run into the forest and showcase wildflowers and riparian habitat. The broader recreation area supports a wide range of activities fishing, boating, water sports, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, picnicking and playgrounds and there are privately run lodging and concession services near the shoreline if you need alternatives to camping. The campground itself provides 164 campsites suitable for both RVs and tents, arranged in four development loops: Loop A contains 63 sites, Loop B 28 sites, Loop C 37 sites and Loop D 36 sites. Sites along the shore include electric and water hookups, and visitors have access to flush toilets and shower houses; many sites are positioned to give quick lake access for launching boats or carrying in a canoe. Moutardier is an unstaffed location for questions call the main office at (270) 286-4511 and its reservation policies include a $10 fee to cancel or change sites or dates once a reservation is created; cancellations made the day before or up to the day after your arrival will be charged the first night's use fee, no-shows are assessed a $20 fee plus the first night's use fee, and if your reservation is for a single night and you are charged the first night's use fee the $10 service charge does not apply. Note also that recreation use fees at the project are nonrefundable. Driving time to the campground is reasonable from several regional cities (about 55 minutes from Bowling Green, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes from Louisville and about 1 hour 45 minutes from Nashville), making Moutardier a practical base for water-based recreation and for side trips to Mammoth Cave and nearby riding stables or golf facilities.
