“Group Site 6. Flat, level, easy setup. What should be a 10 minute drive to MCNP is now an hour long detour around a washed-out river crossing. ”

Maple Springs is a small, primitive group campground set on the quieter side of Mammoth Cave National Park, with seven total sites: three that accommodate both RVs and tents and four set up specifically for equestrian use. The camp feels remote rolling Kentucky hills and the Green River valley frame the setting and wildlife sightings (deer, wild turkey, coyotes) are common. Practical amenities are minimal by design: horse ties are located behind the campsites, a small amphitheater sits on site for programs or gatherings, and a large fire pit serves groups on a first-come, first-served basis. Because the campground is reached most directly by the Green River ferry, access is part of the experience; the ferry is about six miles from the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center, carries three cars per crossing, is free and takes just a few minutes. Vehicles using the ferry must not exceed 8 tons or 16 feet in length, so trailers or larger vehicles should follow the alternate driving route around the ferry (or be prepared for a roughly 45-minute drive if the ferry is out of service). For current ferry schedules and size standards call (270) 758-2166. Maple Springs is a convenient base for exploring the park's long list of recreational opportunities: within Mammoth Cave National Park you can bike, fish, hike, paddle, swim, camp, horseback ride and use horse-camping facilities. From the Visitor Center you can join guided cave tours that cover up to ten miles of passages and lead to landmark chambers such as the Rotunda, Cathedral Domes and the Frozen Niagara formation a reminder that this park protects more than 400 miles (644 km) of mapped cave passageway and a landscape with thousands of years of human history. If you plan to use the group facilities, note the fee/cancellation rule that applies to overnight group reservations: there is a $10 cancellation fee and the first night's recreation use fee is forfeited for cancellations made less than 14 days before arrival (not to exceed the total paid). For reservation rules and policies, consult the national recreation site's rules page at https://www.recreation.gov/rules-reservation-policies.
