Axtel Campground sits on the shore of Rough River Lake, a 5,100-acre impoundment in south central Kentucky managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Commonwealth of Kentucky for wildlife, fisheries and recreation. The campground's shoreline setting opens onto rolling, forested hills and exposed bands of sandstone, shale and limestone; abundant surface and groundwater in the area has carved sinks and caverns that give the shoreline a varied profile and provide habitat for migratory songbirds, waterfowl and other wildlife. Boating and fishing dominate activity here bass, crappie and catfish are the primary targets and bass tournaments are common and nearby marinas offer pontoon, johnboat and jet-ski rentals. Within a short drive are historic Green Farm (with its ancestral home, water-powered mill and Lafayette Green golf course) and, about an hour away, Mammoth Cave National Park; the campground is generally accessed from KY-79 near the small communities around Falls of Rough and McDaniels, roughly 20 miles from Leitchfield and about 95 miles southwest of Louisville. The campground has 153 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, and many sites include electric hookups; those sites are organized across nine loops Loop A (26 sites), Loop B (16), Loop C (12), Loop D (5), Loop E (42), Loop F (16), Loop G (16), Loop H (11) and Loop I (9) so you can choose a busier lakeside loop or a quieter interior row. On-site conveniences include a designated swimming area, a boat ramp, a dump station, flush toilets and showers, drinking water, a fish-cleaning station, a playground and a short trail for quick walks; wi-fi is available through an outside provider for an additional fee. Reservations are accepted, but note the cancellation policy: there is a $10 fee to cancel or change dates/sites; cancellations made the day before arrival through the day after arrival will be charged the first night's use fee; no-shows are charged a $20 fee plus the first night's use fee (if your reservation is only one night and you are charged the first night's use fee, the $10/$20 service fees do not apply).
