Old Town Campground sits near the north end of Perry Lake, its grassy, open campsites running along shoreline that wraps around the park on two sides. The campground offers 39 sites in total: 38 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site. Campsites are arranged with non-electric sites in the sunny, lakeside openings and a shaded loop set back from the water that contains the electric sites, plus a large reserveable group picnic shelter and a playground for family gatherings. Note important seasonal and access details before you pack: during the non-peak season water is turned off at all campsites, shower buildings and dump stations (vault restrooms remain available in both the campground and at the boat ramp), and because of recent flooding damages the park is partially closed check current park notices before you go. Park entrance gates are secured from 10:00 pm 6:00 am on Friday and Saturday nights and for the entire duration of holiday weekends; an exit-only lane allows one-way departures but no late entries are permitted after 10:00 pm except by park staff or emergency personnel. The wider Perry Lake area is a strong draw for water-based recreation and wildlife viewing. The lake, created by a 1969 dam, has about 12,000 surface acres and 159 miles of shoreline and is known regionally for sailing while also supporting powerboating, canoeing and other water sports; the campground's proximity to the boat ramp puts easy water access within reach. Anglers will find abundant species including white crappie, flathead and channel catfish, walleye, white bass and sauger, and nearby public lands (roughly 27,000 acres managed for wildlife) hold turkey, deer, quail, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel and waterfowl. Hikers can tackle the Perry Lake National Recreation Trail that follows the eastern shore for about 30 miles, or the roughly 29 30 mile loop trail around the lake that ranges from gentle southern slopes to rugged, elevation-changing terrain in the north. The campground's location makes it a practical weekend escape from Topeka, Lawrence or Kansas City, while offering a mix of camping, boating, fishing, wildlife viewing, picnicking and environmental-education opportunities right at the water's edge.
