Bloomington West sits west of Clinton Dam on the wooded hills that ring Clinton Lake, and the site is managed as a single reservable group campground. The official campsite inventory lists one total campsite a group area that can accommodate both RVs and tents but that group area itself contains 25 individual spots and is advertised with a total capacity of up to 150 guests; four of those individual spots provide 20/30 amp electric and water hookups. Practical comforts are in place for large gatherings: grills, flush toilets, showers and drinking water are available on site, and a boat ramp is less than a mile away. The access road into the park finishes on a short gravel approach off county roads, so expect a few minutes of slow driving once you leave the paved highway; Clinton Lake and the dam lie within a short drive west of Lawrence and are also approachable from Topeka. The campground's recreation options make it well-suited to family reunions and group outings: a horseshoe pit, sand volleyball court, playground and a softball field sit inside the group area, while Clinton Lake itself is the focal point for boating, canoeing, jet-skiing, swimming and other water sports. Anglers will find crappie, walleye, channel catfish and white bass stocked in the lake, and wildlife viewers regularly spot bald eagles, white-tailed deer, Canada geese and wild turkey along the wooded shoreline and steep bluffs. Three trail systems North Shore, South Shore and the George Latham Trails plus more than 50 miles of multiuse paths around the lake support hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding within a short drive. For visitor services and background on the reservoir's history, the Army Corps of Engineers visitor center and the Clinton Lake Historical Society Museum are nearby; for fees, reservations and seasonal availability check the Corps' or park reservation website before you go, as group sites typically require advance booking.
