“First there was no water at a fifty amp site. Really!!! To many sites without water. Very good shade. The weeds and underbrush does not need to be there It would a much better place if it was cleaned up.”

Mound Valley sits on the clear water of Big Hill Lake in southeast Kansas, roughly five miles east of Cherryvale in the region locals call the Little Ozarks rolling hills of oak-hickory forest that drop down to a shoreline shaded by timber and open prairie beyond. The campground offers direct access to the lake's recreation: boating and trailers can be launched from the on-site ramp and parking area, anglers will find Big Hill a productive fishery for largemouth bass, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, bluegill, walleye and smallmouth bass, and families can cool off at the alcohol-free, sand-covered swim beach with a change house. Equestrians will appreciate that the property ties into the 17-mile Big Hill Lake Horse Trail and several other riding routes; the larger trail system features varied terrain, tethering spots and three parking areas that include limited facilities and may be used for overnight camping by riders. The campground itself contains 84 campsites each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents with most sites located on the waterfront and the remainder a short walk from the lake. On-site amenities include restrooms, showers and potable water, plus day-use features such as a playground and ballfield nearby; boat trailer parking and a designated swim beach are immediately available from Mound Valley. Camping fees are charged at some park areas and a day-use fee applies at the beach and boat ramps; for up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal staffing (this location has limited staff), call the project office at (620) 336-2741. Access to Mound Valley is straightforward from Cherryvale head east off U.S. 169 toward the lake and follow signs for the Mound Valley area.
