Riverside West Campground sits on the west bank of the Neosho River within the 168-acre portion of John Redmond Reservoir, where rolling Flint Hills meet broad river valley farmland. The campground has 26 sites in total: 25 sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and one site reserved for tent camping only, plus a large reservable picnic shelter for group meals. Practical details to note before you go: check-in is at 3 p.m. and check-out at 4 p.m., and camping along the river or on the dam wingwall is not permitted. Reservations and payments are handled through Recreation.gov either by scanning posted QR codes, calling to pay over the phone, or booking online so plan ahead during peak season to secure one of the limited sites. The broader John Redmond Reservoir provides the activities that draw visitors here: nearly 10,000 acres of water and 30,000 acres of surrounding public land for boating, water sports, fishing (look for white crappie, white bass, channel and flathead catfish, plus sunfish), hunting, hiking and wildlife viewing. Several trails thread the hills and shoreline, and the Otter Creek ATV area at the west end of the dam offers about 140 acres of trails for dirt bikes and ATVs (open sunrise to sunset). From the higher ground you'll see expanses of wheat and corn and native grasses big bluestem, Indian grass and switchgrass while lower draws hold elm, black walnut, hickory, ash, hackberry, cottonwood and cedar. If you need supplies or services, the town of Burlington (a few miles to the south) provides gas, groceries and hospital services.
