The Boulder Day Use Area sits adjacent to the campground and provides a dedicated boat ramp, courtesy docks and a fish-cleaning station, plus a reservable group picnic shelter; for broader visitor information and natural history exhibits (including a 215-gallon aquarium), the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center is at the Dam West Recreation Area a short drive away. Recreation at Boulder and across Carlyle Lake centers on water activity and wildlife viewing. Carlyle Lake is a 26,000-acre reservoir created in 1967 that's known locally as one of the region's prime sailing venues and hosts annual races and regattas, but it also supports boating, other water sports, swimming and year-round fishing for bluegill, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, freshwater drum, carp and walleye. Onshore, the campground has a playground, an amphitheater used for environmental education programs, and plenty of open lawn for kids to run; a multi-use biking and walking trail at the dam is a short drive away. Wildlife is abundant migratory waterfowl are common and there are six established Watchable Wildlife Sites with viewing towers around the lake. Note practical policies before you arrive: no-shows who do not cancel by checkout the day after their scheduled arrival are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit their reservation, and cancellations made the day before or the day of arrival incur a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (a one-night reservation forfeits the entire amount paid).
