The Lotus Group Area sits on the eastern shore of Carlyle Lake inside the Coles Creek Recreation Area, about a 50-mile drive east of St. Louis along Old U.S. 50 and local county roads. The facility was developed for groups rather than individual drive-up camping: the area contains five enclosed mini-shelters with electricity, five campsites with electricity, one large enclosed shelter equipped with tables, water and electricity, a playground, vault-style restrooms and a large communal fire ring. The site is configured to host a single group of up to 80 people at a time, and in campground listings it is shown as a single campsite (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) described as accommodating both RV and tent setups (site type breakdown: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites). Road access is via local county roads from Old U.S. 50 into the Coles Creek area; for exact vehicle restrictions, turn-around space, and any limits on RV length check with Carlyle Lake management before you arrive. What sets Lotus apart is immediate access to lake-focused recreation: Coles Creek Beach and the day-use area with boat ramps, courtesy docks and a swimming beach are only a short walk away, and sailors know Carlyle Lake for its open water and regular regattas it's consistently ranked among the top inland sailing lakes in the country. Fishing is a year-round draw here, with bluegill, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, freshwater drum, carp and walleye in the lake; birdwatchers will find migratory waterfowl and other species along the shoreline and at six watchable-wildlife sites with viewing towers scattered around the lake. A multi-use biking and walking trail at the dam is a short drive away, and the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center (Dam West Recreation Area) offers exhibits and local information, including a 215-gallon aquarium of native fish. Fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability are set by the lake managers and can change, so contact the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center or the managing office for up-to-date information and to reserve the group site.
