“Very happy with our stay. The grounds were well kept. Large sites, not on top of your neighbor. ”

Tammy S 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“First had 147 loop 5, but there was no shade. Changed to 137 loop 5. Much nicer. Large spot , and shady. Disappointed the beach was not open but took in some sun. Beach had a very bad smell.. But over all will be back. ”

Kenneth N 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Always great time. Clean friendly and quiet. ”

About

Coles Creek Campground sits on the eastern shore of Carlyle Lake, about 50 miles east of St. Louis and a short drive from the town of Carlyle, offering direct access to Illinois' largest man-made lake. The campground contains 147 individual sites each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and equipped with electric hookups, a picnic table and a fire ring and two group areas (Group Camping Area A with 18 sites and Area B with 11 sites) for larger gatherings. Most sites are either right on the shoreline or just a short walk to the water, so mornings often begin with waterfront views and easy launch points. Modern comforts are in place: flush toilets, hot showers and a laundry room, and the campground sits adjacent to the Coles Creek Day Use Area where a reservable picnic shelter and a designated swimming beach with its own shower make day trips convenient for families. The lake itself shapes the recreational life here. Boat ramps and courtesy docks make launching simple, and Carlyle's 26,000 acres and steady winds have given it a reputation among sailboaters and hosts seasonal regattas; fishing is year-round with bluegill, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, drum, carp and walleye available. Onshore, the campground offers playgrounds and an amphitheater used for interpretive programs, while a multi-use biking and walking trail at the dam is a short drive away. Wildlife viewing is good around the lake migratory waterfowl and other birds are common and six Watchable Wildlife Sites with viewing towers are open to the public and the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center (in the Dam West Recreation Area) adds local exhibits and a 215-gallon native fish aquarium. Reservations are managed under the park's policy: campers who fail to arrive or cancel by check-out time the day after their scheduled arrival are charged a $20 no-show service fee and forfeit the reservation; cancellations made the day before or on the day of arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount with no additional service charge). The campground's street address is 16225 Coles Creek Rd, Carlyle, IL 62231, and it's most directly reached from regional routes serving the I-57/Old U.S. 50 corridor.
