Dam East McNair Campground sits on the southern shore of Carlyle Lake, Illinois' largest man-made lake, about 50 miles east of St. Louis. The lake's open water and steady breezes have made it one of the nation's better inland sailing venues annual races and regattas are common and there are boat ramps and courtesy docks nearby if you want to spend the day on the water. The recreation mix here is heavily water-oriented: swimming at the on-site beach, fishing for species such as bluegill, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, freshwater drum, carp and walleye, and a full range of water sports. On shore you'll find multiple playgrounds, a nature trail and connections to a multi-use biking and walking trail that runs along the dam; wildlife watching is also good throughout the year, with migratory waterfowl and other birds visible from several established viewing sites around the lake and interpretive exhibits at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center in the Dam West area. The campground itself has 47 total campsites, each set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, and a reservable group picnic shelter that holds up to 80 people. Basic services include bathhouses, laundry facilities and a swimming beach; McNair is tied into the broader Dam East facilities so you can easily reach nearby amenities. Sites may be reserved from the current day up to six months in advance, and it's important to note the reservation policies: a no-show (failure to arrive or cancel by check-out time the day after your scheduled arrival) results in a $20 service fee and forfeiture of the reservation, and cancellations made the day before or the day of arrival incur a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount paid).
