Sitting on the western shore of Mackay Reservoir, the Joe T. Fallini Recreation Site is the Challis Field Office's only campground that offers full RV hookups, making it a practical choice for travelers with larger rigs. The campground contains 28 sites in total: 22 designed for RV use and six tent-only sites. Hookups and an on-site dump station are complemented by basic amenities restrooms, drinking water, and an interpretive trail that follows the shoreline so you can easily move between boating or fishing and campsite comforts. From the campsites you get clear views across the water to the Lost River Range and the prominent Mt. McCaleb to the east, with the lower knobs and sage around the reservoir giving the area an open, wide-sky character. Mackay Reservoir is the focal point for water-based activity: the campground's boat ramp provides access for jet skiing, water skiing and sailing, and there are additional launches along the reservoir and one downstream of the dam. Fishing is popular here through the warmer months and transitions to ice fishing in late winter, while wildlife viewing from shore or along the interpretive trail is a steady draw. This is a fee site (fees remain at the site to support maintenance and improvements); for the latest information on availability, seasonal conditions, or reservation options call the Challis field office at (208) 879-6200. The campground's location about six miles north of Mackay on Highway 93, on the west side of the road also puts trailheads, historical sites, and the Borah Peak area within easy reach for day trips.
