Perched at about 8,400 feet on the eastern slope of Mount Harrison in the Albion Mountains of southern Idaho, Thompson Flat Campground sits in a high meadow ringed by tall pine and fir and often splashed with wildflowers in summer. The campground offers a total of 11 campsites, each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, and most sites include large picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Roads and parking spurs are gravel; accessible vault toilets are provided and a campground host is on-site. Access is up Howell Canyon Road from State Highway 77 south of Declo and Albion the last seven-mile stretch above Pomerelle is steep and winding, so drivers should allow extra time and watch for the campground sign on the right. Recreational opportunities radiate outward from the campground: Twin Lakes, immediately across the road, provides picnic areas, horse corrals and trailheads, while Lake Cleveland is about a two-mile drive and offers fishing, canoeing and additional hiking routes. The mountain surrounding Thompson Flat supports mountain biking, horse riding and off-highway vehicle trails; Pomerelle Ski Area, just below the campground, runs lifts for summer hiking and biking and operates scenic chairlift rides and limited dining, typically on weekends. Group camping is available in the area and must be reserved in advance; for individual site reservations, seasonal availability, fees and up-to-date access conditions check the Sawtooth National Forest/Forest Service information before you go.
