At 8,300 feet on the east shore of Lake Cleveland, the East Side campground sits in an open alpine basin below Mt. Harrison and just above the timberline where late-season snow and wildflower meadows shape the summer landscape. There are seven campsites in this loop, and each site is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs the East Side is generally the better choice if you're hauling a trailer or a large rig. Access from Interstate 84 is via State Highway 77 south through the small farming communities toward Howell Canyon Road and up to the Pomerelle Ski Area; the climb is steep and winding, and lingering snowdrifts often keep the road and campground inaccessible until early to mid-July. Because the campground is a favorite of nearby residents, expect weekends from early July through Labor Day to be busy and check the Sawtooth National Forest reservation system for availability and any fees before you go. Lake Cleveland centers the recreation here: non-motorized boating, kayaking, swimming and fishing happen right off the shore, and motorized vehicles are restricted to system roads and trails (no cross-country motorized travel). For hikers and bikers, Mt. Harrison is only a couple of miles away and features a staffed lookout tower, while the Pomerelle Ski Area provides lift access for summer mountain biking and trail hikes; Twin Lakes Campground and the Skyline Trail about two miles from the lake offer horse camping, horseback riding and longer trail options. Facilities at the East Side are minimal beyond the seven sites, so plan accordingly for water, parking needs and pack-in/pack-out rules, and allow extra time on the steep approach if towing a trailer.
