About

Prairie Flower Recreation Area occupies more than 60 acres along Saylorville Lake, part of the larger 26,000-acre Saylorville Lake Project that stretches up the Des Moines River Valley. The campground sits on the east side of the lake with many sites in the south end offering views across the 6,000-acre waterbody; the surrounding landscape includes over 40 acres of planted prairie grasses and wildflowers that color the grounds from mid-summer into fall. The lake itself supports a wide range of water recreation boating, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing and swimming while anglers come for walleye, wiper, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and northern pike; river fishing and hunting are also options across the project. For day trips and active access, the Neal Smith Trail, a 24-mile paved National Recreation Trail, connects Des Moines to Big Creek State Park and runs along the east side of Saylorville for biking, jogging, in-line skating and long walks. Wildlife viewing is reliable here white-tailed deer, wild turkey and abundant waterfowl are frequently seen and the campground area includes an accessible fishing pier and nearby boat ramps and a fishing dock for launching outings on the water. The campground inventory totals 252 sites, all designed to accommodate both RVs and tents and equipped with electric hookups; the site layout is organized into several named loops, including ASTE (31 sites), CONE (43), FLEA (6), HONE (18), IRON (14), JUNE (8), LEAD (14) and OX-E (10). Facilities you can count on during a stay include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water and a dump station, plus group shelters, playgrounds and a supervised swimming beach. On-site and nearby amenities extend to educational programming, a visitor center, a hiking trail, volleyball courts and a disc golf course, and there's a concession/recreation area for additional services. Practical details such as fees, reservation windows and seasonal availability change from year to year, so campers should consult the Saylorville Lake visitor center or the official campground reservation site before arriving; the combination of paved trail access, room for boats and an extensive site inventory makes Prairie Flower a strong base for both active lake days and quieter wildlife observation.
