“Clean park . Friendly staff. Large sites. Wish they had more with full hookups.”
“Good size sites, convenient to Des Moines. Must see Living History Farms- ~7mi away. Good smaller size lake, access from Bob Shetler, perfect for kayak or canoe paddling without waves and sheltered from the wind which can be a problem on Saylorville Lake.”
“I like the spots that back up to the river. Nice level, concrete sites with decent shade and water close by. I've been there twice now. ”

Bob Shetler Recreation Area sits in the tailwater below the 26,000-acre Saylorville Lake project, where open grassy campsites and large shade trees look toward the Des Moines River. The campground contains 67 total campsites; all 67 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and come with electrical hookups. Basic comforts are on site: flush and pit toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station, and most sites are within an easy walk of the shore. A short drive or walk from the loops you'll find boat ramps and an accessible fishing dock, plus a nearby visitor center, a hiking trail, volleyball courts and a disc golf course. Wildlife is common around camp white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, waterfowl and other small game are regularly seen so expect a mix of open views and frequent animal activity. Recreation at Saylorville Lake ranges from placid shoreline fishing to wind-driven water sports; the lake supports boating, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing and swimming, and anglers chase walleye, wiper, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and northern pike. The paved Neal Smith Trail, a 24-mile National Recreation Trail that links Des Moines to Big Creek State Park, passes along the east side of the lake and is popular for biking, hiking, jogging, walking and in-line skating. The broader Saylorville project also offers opportunities for horseback riding, environmental education programs, hunting, winter sports, playgrounds and other organized recreation sites. Practical details such as fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability are set by the managing agency; check the Saylorville Lake visitor center or the official U.S. Army Corps of Engineers site before you go. To reach the campground from the Des Moines area, follow the route toward Ankeny/Oralabor Road (Highway 415) and cross Saylorville Lake Dam to arrive at the park.
