“I found the Campground clean and level where I set my tent up. I wish it had been more quiet as there were cars coming and going late into the evening. I certainly understand without having a gate that closes at a certain time, people will come and go throughout the night. ”
“Acorn Valley CG - an unexpected, pleasurable experience. We enjoyed a clean and spacious grassy campsite. The walk-in site was just a few yards from the parking. The bathrooms were clean with hooks on the wall. We will stop in again on our next cross country drive.”

Acorn Valley sits on the east side of the 26,000-acre Saylorville Lake Project, a corridor of reservoir, timber and prairie that follows more than 50 miles up the Des Moines River Valley. The campground's entrance is marked by mature Bur Oaks and the site occupies a 26-acre fringe of upland timber, where white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, pheasants, waterfowl and other small game are commonly seen. The area is built for variety: anglers come for walleye, wiper, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and northern pike; the lake and marina support boating and water sports; and the paved Neal Smith Trail a 24-mile National Recreation Trail linking Des Moines to Big Creek State Park runs nearby and is popular for biking, running, walking and in-line skating. Within the broader Saylorville complex you'll also find picnic areas with group shelters, boat ramps, a fishing dock and an accessible fishing pier, plus seasonal opportunities for environmental education, horseback riding and winter sports. The campground itself has 85 sites in total, arranged to suit both family RV/tent rigs and primitive tent campers: 29 sites function as combined RV and tent family sites with electric hookups, and 56 are tent sites (many of which are walk-to, primitive-style). Two group tent areas accommodate larger parties, including a youth group camping area that is restricted to organized youth groups and a standard group area open to all visitors. Amenities on-site include flush toilets, showers, drinking water and a dump station; nearby facilities make it easy to move from an afternoon on the water to an evening at camp. Acorn Valley is accessed from the north side of Des Moines near Johnston off I-35/80 and practical details such as current fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability are handled by the managing office, so check the park's official information before you go.
