“This is a favorite campground because it is close to home and allows us to have quick little get aways. The hosts are always friendly and helpful, bathrooms are usually clean and the sites are huge. ”

R. Shaefer Heard Campground sits on the southern shore of West Point Lake, a 25,900-acre reservoir that stretches about 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River where Alabama and Georgia meet. The campground is set in a forested lakeside landscape framed by rolling fields and woodlands that put on strong color in the fall; sites look out over water that is part of a system with roughly 525 miles of shoreline and more than 40 square miles of surface area. West Point is a working lake for boaters and anglers: there are 34 public boat ramps around the lake (including the ramp at R. Shaefer Heard) and two privately owned full-service marinas, and the water supports bass, catfish, crappie and bream. Hikers and bikers can use several trails that follow the lake edge including the Lakeside Trail, which sees mountain bikers frequently and a nearly 10,000-acre wildlife management area at the lake's upper end provides habitat for wildlife and managed hunting opportunities. Bank fishing is strong throughout the recreation area, and public fishing piers at Hardley Creek, Rocky Point and McGee Bridge parks include accessible ramps; Hardley Creek also maintains a pond geared for preteens and visitors with disabilities. The campground itself offers 117 sites all configured to accept both RVs and tents with electric and water hookups, and two identified loops: LOOA with 16 sites and LOOE with 19 sites among the overall layout. On-site conveniences include a dump station, coin laundry, hot showers, a boat ramp for easy water access, and hiking trails that start from the campground perimeter. Beyond the campsite you'll find 25 day-use parks around the lake providing tennis courts, ball fields, basketball courts, picnic shelters, playground areas and fishing piers with fish attractors. Reservations and payments are handled through the standard NRRS system; note that the park accepts credit, debit or prepaid cards only at campgrounds, and a $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations (with additional fees for late cancellations) per NRRS policy. From West Point, Georgia, the campground is reached a few miles north on U.S. Highway 29 and then a short drive to the lake's southern shore, making it an easy base for boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and general lakeside recreation.
