“Best site so far for small RVs. Primitive but so beautiful.”
“Our favorite place to camp, primitive, but manageable. Not a good place for large RVs.”
“Mark, the camp host is awesome. The campground is a gem with access to a nearby trailhead, no side by sides allowed, and nearby to some lakes. ”

Purgatoire Campground sits near the headwaters of the North Fork of the Purgatoire River in the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, at about 9,800 feet. The primitive site is arranged on two loops: a large grassy meadow that caters to equestrian campers and a wooded loop shaded by aspen and spruce. There are 20 campsites in all 13 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 6 designated equestrian sites, and a single RV-only site with grass-and-gravel parking aprons, picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets, and a hand pump for drinking water. Trash service is provided and the equestrian spots are sized to fit large horse trailers. The campground was built by the Youth Conservation Corps in 1976 and was originally known as Potato Patch; it's reached by traveling roughly 25 miles south of La Veta on State Route 12 and then a short way on a rough gravel road, so expect a mountain drive to reach the site. Recreation centers on the adjacent North Fork Trail #1309, whose five miles of non-motorized singletrack offer hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders cool forest shade and mountain views, while the creek-sized river at the campground draws anglers casting for trout. The site supports basic camping, picnicking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing on site, while the broader Pike-San Isabel/Cimarron and Comanche landscapes provide longer trails, alpine lakes, fourteeners, and other regional activities like climbing and backcountry travel. Important practical notes: Purgatoire is primitive no hookups and reservations and cancellations follow Recreation.gov policies: cancellations made up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival results in a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee (including tax and add-ons); one-night reservation cancellations forfeit the entire amount paid; no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after reservation end; card refunds go back to the original card, while cash/check refunds arrive by Treasury check (which can take 6 8 weeks). Also be aware that drones are regulated on Forest Service lands and must be operated in accordance with UAS rules and federal law.
