What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (24 reviews, ★ 4.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Simply incredible site with plenty of access to so many adventures. Facilities were flawless and the host Scott was beyond helpful and on point.”

Jason S 5 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“High altitude, mostly open area camping. Somewhat level sites. Windy. Not sure why the area looked like a tornado went through with many trees toppled over. Amenities are fine but note the lake is not immediately adjacent to the campground. ”

Brian S 3 · Jul 2025 · Recreation.gov

About

At 10,500 feet in the San Isabel National Forest, Blue Lake Campground sits among aspen and spruce with broad views of the Culebra Range, offering a clear high-country Colorado feel. The site is reached from Colorado Highway 12 south of Cuchara via Forest Service Road 422, about 4 miles in; FSR 436 crosses the road nearby, a rough jeep track that leads up toward Trinchera Peak where bighorn sheep are often seen. The campground contains 16 campsites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents; each site includes a table and a metal fire ring, and you'll find a mix of shaded and sunny spots. Facilities are rustic but functional: a camp host on site sells firewood bundles, vault toilets and drinking water are provided, and there are no electrical or septic hookups. Both reservation and first-come, first-served sites are offered, so plan your arrival accordingly and check Recreation.gov for current openings and any seasonal access notices. Recreation centers on the two small lakes and a short trail network: Blue Lake is about a half mile from camp and Bear Lake approximately a mile away, both stocked several times during the summer for anglers; a well-marked trail also links Bear Lake and Blue Lake and is open to foot and horse traffic. Beyond the immediate campground you can hike into the Spanish Peaks Wilderness (roughly 14 miles away), ride horses on nearby routes, look for wildlife along alpine ridges, or use forest roads for off-highway vehicle travel where permitted. Be aware of campground policies before you book: cancellations for individual campsites up to 2 days before the reservation start date incur a $10.00 cancellation fee; cancelling the day before or on the day of arrival carries a $10.00 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (including tax and applicable add-ons); one-night reservations cancelled forfeit the entire amount paid. No-shows callers who do not arrive and do not cancel by checkout time the day after their scheduled arrival are assessed a $20.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and applicable add-ons. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within 7 days of the reservation end date; card refunds are credited to the original account, while check or cash refunds are issued by Treasury check (which may take 6 8 weeks). Finally, note that Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) are regulated on Forest Service lands and must follow applicable laws and Forest Service policy, so check rules before flying.
