At 10,480 feet in San Isabel National Forest, Bear Lake Campground sits among aspen and spruce with the Culebra Range rising nearby, giving campers a clear sense of high-country Colorado. The campground contains 13 sites that accommodate both tents and RVs; each site includes a picnic table and a metal fire ring, and sites vary from shaded pockets under trees to open, sunny clearings. There are no electrical or septic hookups, so RV visitors need to be fully self-contained; an extra vehicle fee of $8.00 applies if you bring an additional vehicle. Basic services on site include vault toilets, potable drinking water, and a camp host who sells bundled firewood. A small tributary of the Cuchara River runs through the campground and Bear Lake sits about 1/8 mile away (Blue Lake is roughly a mile), both of which are stocked several times during the summer and are the main draws for anglers staying here. Outdoor access from Bear Lake is immediate: Indian Trail #1300 starts at the north end of the loop and links you to a 23-mile multi-user trail system open to ATVs, motorcycles, bicycles, hikers and horse riders, while a quieter, well-marked trail between Bear Lake and Blue Lake is reserved for foot and horse traffic. The broader Peaks to Prairies - Tracks to Trails landscape offers biking, horseback riding, off-highway vehicle routes, climbing, wildlife viewing and more, and the Spanish Peaks Wilderness is about 15 miles away for longer day hikes. Reservations and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov; cancel up to two days before arrival and you'll incur a $10 cancellation fee, while cancellations the day before or on arrival carry a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night reservations are nonrefundable). No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night, and refund requests must be submitted within seven days of the reservation end date refunds to cards are returned to the original payment method, while cash or check refunds are issued by Treasury check. To reach the campground, follow Forest Service Road 422 about five miles west from Colorado Highway 12 south of the town of Cuchara.
