“It was beautuful and uncrowded just after Labor Day. Clean and well kept. ”
“Great spot. The hike to the falls is great! It was a bit windy and cold when we were there in mid October.”
“Great campground, everything was spread out and the bathrooms were well maintained. Right outside of the national park, I would forsure go back”

Perched at about 9,088 feet on the eastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo range, Zapata Falls Campground sits 3.5 miles up an unpaved spur off Highway 150, roughly five miles south of Great Sand Dunes National Park. The campground's 24 individual sites are spread across two roughly one-mile loops among piñon pines: 11 sites accept both RVs and tents, 12 are designated RV sites, and 1 is tent-only; a separate group tent site is also available. Parking spurs on the RV loop generally handle rigs up to about 50 feet. Basic but solid amenities include picnic tables, tent pads, fire rings, food-storage lockers, six vault toilets, trash bins, interpretive signs, trailhead and overflow parking there's no public drinking water here, but cell service is reported as good and all facilities stay open year-round. Fees are modest: individual sites are $11 per night, the group tent site is $20 per night, and stays are limited to 14 days; for questions about conditions or management check with the San Luis Valley Field Office. The campground is less about hookups and more about views and access: from the upper gravel road you can see the San Luis Valley, the San Juan Mountains to the west, and the sand sea of Great Sand Dunes below, with multiple Sangre de Cristo peaks including several 14ers rising nearby. A short, mildly steep half-mile trail from the day-use area leads to South Zapata Creek and the falls, where water has carved a narrow chute that drops roughly 25 30 feet; reaching the base requires fording the creek and scrambling over wet, often slippery rock. Summer brings a cool, shady pocket of spray and the chance to spot black swifts one of the state's few breeding sites while winter turns the falls into a column of ice that attracts experienced ice climbers (but is hazardous to casual visitors). Trails from the campground also connect to the South Zapata Creek Trail and the Rio Grande National Forest for longer backcountry outings; typical activities here include camping, hiking, climbing, photography and picnicking, but visitors should use caution around the creek, respect nesting birds, and avoid climbing the canyon walls.
