Dumont Campground sits high on the Park Range near Rabbit Ears Peak, with sweeping views toward the Continental Divide and several other Rocky Mountain ranges. The site consists of a small campground and day-use area clustered around a 50-acre alpine lake framed by spruce-fir forest and wildflower meadows. There are 21 total campsites, and all 21 are suitable for both RVs and tent camping; the sites are described as private and roomy, many with clear views of the meadow and lake. Basic amenities include three restrooms and hand pumps for drinking water; there is a picnic area a short walk from the campground at Dumont Lake, where only electric-motored or hand-propelled boats are allowed. The campground sits off U.S. Highway 40/Rabbit Ears Pass about 22 miles southeast of Steamboat Springs and roughly a mile down Forest Road 315 check current road conditions, fees, and reservation rules with the Forest Service before you go, and be aware that no electrical, sewer, or potable water hookups are listed for campsites. Outdoor opportunities concentrate on the lake and the network of nearby dirt roads and trails. Anglers can fish for trout by spin or fly in the lake and adjacent streams, birdwatchers will find rich interest around the water, and wildflower displays fill the meadows in warmer months. Hikers can reach the two-mile Rabbit Ears Trail from the campground and connect with the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail in the vicinity; mountain bikers and backpackers also use the local routes, while rock climbers will find nearby routes to explore. Because Dumont is in high country, elevation and weather vary frost can occur any time and summer storms may bring snow and high winds so pack layers and be prepared for changing conditions. Beyond the immediate campground, the Medicine Bow Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland offer a wider array of recreation, including auto touring, OHV routes, horseback riding and camping, picnicking, winter sports, and additional hunting and fishing access.
