“Enjoyable location. No cell service which was fine with us. Generally the campground is quiet. Only gripe we have is the fire rings are too tall and hard to get very close too. Bathrooms were clean and tidy and camp hosts were easy to speak with.”
“Peaceful. Nice circular 3mile walk around the lake. ”
“Campground was extremely clean and quiet. ”

Buckeye Recreation Area sits at about 7,600 feet in a valley ringed by mature Ponderosa pines with the high peaks of the La Sal Mountains visible from many campsites. The recreation area lies south of Moab and east of Paradox, Colorado; the recommended approach follows US-191 south to Highway 46 into Paradox and then USFS roads (a winding 13-mile gravel stretch from Paradox) to the campground drivers should follow the Forest Service "Facility Information Getting Here" directions closely and not rely solely on Google or Apple Maps, which have routed some visitors onto 4WD roads or into locked private gates. An alternate forest road route exists but can be very muddy or impassable when wet and crosses private land in places, so use caution and respect property boundaries. For up-to-date conditions or specific questions about the site, call the facility at (435) 259-7155. The developed campground provides 31 total sites each can accommodate both RVs and tents with many sites in the main Pioneer area available by reservation; there is a 14-day stay limit. Campsites include graveled parking spurs, concrete picnic tables, fire rings and a utility table, and vault toilets are available on site. The reservoir is the focal point for fishing and canoeing, and a boat ramp supports small fishing boats with a 5-horsepower motor limit and wakeless-speed rules. Beyond the developed loop you'll find less-formal camping scattered around the water, a reservable group site and a day-use picnic area. Forest roads and nearby state lands provide off-highway vehicle touring and motorized trails, while the La Sal Mountains and surrounding public lands offer hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting and wildlife-watching opportunities; Canyonlands and Arches National Parks and the recreation hubs of Monticello and Moab are roughly a 1.5-hour drive away for day trips.
