About

Mogote Campground sits at about 8,400 feet along the fast-flowing Conejos River, its 43 campsites arranged in an upper and lower loop beneath stands of ponderosa pine with pockets of cottonwood, spruce, willow and aspen. The lower loop hugs the river and many sites look directly onto the water, while the upper loop climbs slightly higher and includes the campground's accessible toilet. All 43 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, but there are no electrical hookups, so plan on self-contained power or dry camping. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill; vault toilets, drinking water and trash bins are provided, and firewood is available for purchase on site. For facility-specific details such as fees, reservation policies or seasonal openings, call (805) 434-1996 before you go. Fishing and hiking are the main draws at Mogote: the Conejos River is designated a Gold Medal River and is known for rainbow and brown trout with good potential for trophy catches, and nearby trails include the 15-mile Elk Creek Trail and the 10.9-mile South Fork Conejos Trail. Beyond the campground, Rio Grande National Forest offers a wide range of outdoor opportunities from auto touring, biking and boating to horseback riding, off-highway vehicle routes and winter sports and the historic Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad can be reached from Antonito, where the steam-operated narrow-gauge line runs a lengthy 640-mile route through former mining towns. The campground is located roughly 15 miles west of Antonito on Highway 17, a short drive from the highway down the signed access road.
