Elk Creek Campground sits at about 8,500 feet in the lower stretch of Conejos Canyon, an easy drive west from Antonito along Highway 17. The site is lightly wooded with spruce and pockets of ponderosa pine and a grassy understory; Elk Creek runs alongside the loop and several campsites are right at the water's edge. The campground has 38 total sites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, with a mix of single and double sites. Most sites include accessible picnic tables, metal grills and fire rings; vault toilets and a drinking water source are provided. A short dirt spur off Highway 17 leads into the campground, so access is straightforward but expect a rustic approach rather than paved pull-throughs. Recreation in the immediate area focuses on creekside activities and backcountry access: Elk Creek offers brown and rainbow trout fishing, and the nearby Elk Creek and Duck Lake trailheads provide entry into the South San Juan Wilderness with easy-to-intermediate routes to Dipping Lakes and Duck Lake. For a different kind of day trip, the historic Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad leaves from Antonito (about 23 miles away) for a 64-mile steam train journey through old mining country. The wider Rio Grande National Forest supports a broad range of activities hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting, horseback riding and winter sports among them so plan according to season and weather. Fees, reservations and seasonal openings aren't specified here; for facility-specific details call (805) 434-1996 before you go, and remember that at 8,500 feet temperatures are cooler and conditions can change quickly, so pack layers and be prepared for high-altitude camping.
