Hahns Peak Lake Campground sits at about 8,500 feet on the shore of a 160-acre lake roughly 30 miles north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, framed by stands of spruce, pine and fir and with the 10,774-foot Hahns Peak rising nearby. The lakeshore is threaded by the nearly one-mile West Side Lake Trail and a popular mountain-biking loop on the Prospector Trail, and anglers can fish for trout from shore or from non-motorized and electric-motor boats. Wildflowers such as lupine color the campsites in summer and the surrounding forest supports a full complement of high-country wildlife elk, mule deer, moose, coyotes and the occasional black bear so standard food-storage precautions are wise. At this elevation frost can occur any time and summer storms can bring snow and high winds, so come prepared for rapidly changing conditions. The developed campground contains 26 campsites in total configured as 23 single sites and three double sites to accommodate larger groups and every site is suitable for both tents and RVs. The facility is compact, and sites are generally spacious and private rather than tightly packed; basic site amenities are limited to what you find on site, so check current listings for details before you go. Recreation on the surrounding Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and nearby Thunder Basin National Grassland extends well beyond the lake: expect hiking, biking, boating (non-motor/electric), OHV and horseback trails, fishing, hunting in season, winter sports, and plentiful wildlife viewing. The campground is reached from the Steamboat Springs area via County Road 129 and Forest Road 486; because fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings can change, contact the forest service for up-to-date information before planning your trip.
