The lock on the gate doesn’t work. There were people in their camping that we had to ask to leave and multiple people tried to come in and camp while we were there.

About

Masterson Group Campground sits in an open stretch of grassy meadow framed by towering pines in Mendocino National Forest, offering a roomy, communal camping experience rather than individual campsites. This is a single group site (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1; SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) configured to hold up to 75 guests and 25 vehicles, so it's a good choice when you need space for a big family reunion, scout troop, or friends' gathering. Facilities are basic but useful: the campground is traditional primitive camping with toilets and running water, and a large communal fire ring anchors the meadow for evening conversations and s'mores. The approach includes a short quarter-mile drive from the access road to a gated entrance; the broader area of Mendocino National Forest California's only national forest not crossed by a paved road lies roughly three hours north of San Francisco and Sacramento and requires some travel on forest routes, so plan for variable road conditions when bringing RVs or trailers. The campground's setting puts you within reach of several outdoor options: Plaskett Lake is about a one-mile walk and offers trout fishing, canoeing and a day-use area planted with trout for anglers, while the forest's 913,306 acres of mountains and canyons provide miles of hiking, backpacking, OHV trails, horseback riding and dispersed hunting grounds. Wildlife sightings deer, birds, rabbits, chipmunks and the occasional bear are common, and the area sees increased visitation during hunting season. Because Masterson is a primitive group facility, check current fees, reservation rules, seasonal openings and road conditions with the US Forest Service before you go; bring basic supplies and expect to be largely self-sufficient apart from the provided toilets and potable water.
